SYLAR, a fusion of Science, Art and Life, the brand aims to enhance program through artistic design and the most advanced technology.
The brand came about while conceiving ways to reinvigorate Atlantic City. The decline of the casino model provided an interesting opportunity for hotel re-purposing.
Myself, along with two partners came up with the idea of a research resort, where professionals in the medical and science fields could meet and develop new technology. The new technology could also lend itself to hotel programs, i.e. sound engineering would be implemented at the club.
Welcome to Sylar, where Science, Life and Art merge
The Sylar brand was conceived to replace the failing casino model in Atlantic City after the closure of four of the city's major casino hotels.
This book is separated into three chapters. The first chapter entails the concept behind the brand, what does it mean and also what kind of hotel experience this brand provides.
After extensive research into local and global trends, both on a macro and micro scale, Sylar as a brand is focusing on trends such as indoor/outdoor design, art and technology and sustainable design.
The typology of a Sylar hotel is a research resort, where scientists, medical professionals and professors come to our research facility to develop new technologies that will be utilized in hotel programs.
Sylar could host clinical research studies along with symposiums for professional gatherings.
Our focus is to be Progressive, Experiential, Symbiotic and Progressive.
The design would be inspired by nature and take advantage of the newest technologies created in the hotel labs
SYLAR - fusion of SY (science) L (life) AR (art).
We are really focused on families, artists, students, scientists and doctors.
As a hotel, there are hundreds of science infused programs offered including Salt Air Therapy, Glowing Nighttime Water Skiing and Molecular Gastronomy.
In order to activate the city, Sylar will occupy abandoned properties with bioluminescent jellyfish tanks that will glow at night throughout the city. Live feeds of the tanks will then be projected on screens in nearby cities to promote Atlantic City tourism.
ATLANTIC CITY & THE WORLD
Sylar will work with the local hospital, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, along with doctors and scientists globally.
Spatial consideration of The Revel.
The Revel being one of the largest buildings in the country, over 5,000,000 sq. feet, we conducted several spatial studies to really understand its size. Above, we placed several New York City Landmarks within the hotel.
Above are several models I created along with two partners to begin thinking of ways to program the hotel.
Drawing studies were the last step before devising a plan for programming the interior.
After spatial studies, drawing and model making, we decided that the size of the space required a system of systems. While reviewing the pre-existing floor plans, we realized there are void spaces throughout the podium where research towers could stand. After retrofitting research towers, we started plugging in hotel program that would stem from the research towers, creating a radial system where hotel program extends from the research towers.
Located near the Lobby of the hotel, P-DISH is a modern take on the casino buffet. Instead of arranging food by nationality, food is arranged by method of production, i.e. 3-D printing or Hydroponics. The plan was inspired by an artist's photograph of a floral arrangement hung in space overlooking the earth. Porcelain sculptures which extend from floor to ceiling display the available foods.
There are three areas where you can sit, relax and consume: a molecular mixology bar, flavor infused gas bar and a back of the room lounge.
THE SALT CAVE
Inspired by artist Noala O'Donovan's porcelain sculpture, the floor plan of the Salt Cave focuses on the four pools. Each pool consists of different waters that treat a variety of ailments. Surrounding the pools are treatment rooms where the most avant-garde treatments can be had.
THE SALT CAVE
There are four pools that exist within the Salt Cave: a bioluminescent salt water pool where ocean water would be pumped from pre-existing salt water pipes running through Atlantic City, a seaweed pool where seaweed grows and detoxifies swimmers, a carp or "doctor fish" pool where dead skin is removed and a snail pool that softens and heals skin.
